CEA Condemns Political Hate Mail

Anti-Semitic mailer targeted Jewish candidate for State Senate

October 30, 2018

The Connecticut Education Association today criticized Ed Charamut, the Republican candidate for State Senate in the 9th District, for an anti-Semitic postcard attacking his opponent. The postcard, mailed to residents' homes uses a hateful stereotype to depict State Rep. Matthew Lesser, a Democrat who is running against Charamut.

"No candidates should engage in anti-Semitic or other hate-filled rhetoric against people of different races and faiths," said CEA President Jeff Leake. "The attack is especially heinous in light of the fact that the nation is in mourning from the deadliest assault against the Jewish community in U.S. history."

The postcards were mailed to residents in Middletown, Wethersfield, Newington, Cromwell, and Rocky Hill just days after a man shouting anti-Semitic slurs walked into a Pittsburgh synagogue and opened fire on worshipers, killing 11 people.

"The Connecticut State Senate is no place for people who disrespect others because of their religion or race," said Leake. "Charamut should drop out of the race."

The Connecticut Education Association is Connecticut's largest teachers' union, representing active and retired educators across the state.
